Stuff that happens to me all the time
I woke up this morning to the sound of someone knocking on my door. I couldn’t tell what time it was as I don’t have a proper visible clock, but it was light out. So I stumbled out of bed with my short legs and high college-dorm bed, and then my knee gave out and I landed hard on my tile floor. Directly on my knee. Ouch does not even begin to explain what that felt like. It hurt so bad...

Blending in
When I was in my late teens, I used to take my mother out to brunch on Sundays. We went to this restaurant that has since closed and I forget its name. It was nice — mimosas, a waffle bar, an omelette bar, smoked salmon, classical music, and attentive servers with bow ties. We went there once a month or so. One Sunday, my mother invited my college roommates to go with us, and one of them...

What's Happening in Egypt Explained. (UPDATED) →
courageuse: adailyriot: promotingpeace: The basics: Egypt is a large, mostly Arab, mostly Muslim country. At around 80 million people, it has the largest population in the Middle East and the third-largest in Africa. Most of Egypt is in North Africa, although the part of the country that borders Israel, the Sinai peninsula, is in Asia. Its other neighbors are Sudan (to the South), Libya (to...

I really hate it when I tell someone that the rent at my apartment is “30% of your income” and then they ask how much I pay. Are they just dumb and don’t know what “30%” means, or are they trying to ask me what my income is? I think I’ll go with the former.

Bus wisdom
Man: I am sick of all those people downtown asking me for spare change for food. I can't take two steps without someone hitting me up for food money. Fuck that. I go to the food bank. Why can't they go to the food bank? They're probably not spending it on food, anyway. I tell you what, though -- if I see somebody with a sign that says "NEED MONEY FOR WEED" I will totally give them money. There ain't no weed bank.

Yay me!
I left my laptop at home today and I went out and interacted with people face to face. FACE TO FACE. I put on actual clothing and I socialized with a group of people. I even smiled. I even laughed. Did I mention that I left my laptop at home? That is monumental in and of itself. I did have a couple of minor brain fog moments, but I don’t think it was too noticeable. I’m going to try to...

Huge
I am having a lazy day and watching Huge on Hulu. I hadn’t seen it before, but I like it quite a lot. It is both delightful and depressing. Every episode I’ve seen so far has made me relive some junior-high trauma, and isn’t that what great storytelling is all about? I am annoyed with the characters’ My So-Called Life-esque propensity to say “like” in a most...

Embarrassment
I have an e-mail address I almost never use. I use it when I’m signing up for something that is going to send me a bunch of e-mails I don’t want to deal with, or if I’m worried about spam. My father tried to contact me several years ago, and I used that address to contact him to find out what he wanted. He didn’t want anything in particular, so I never wrote him again.  ...

More bureaucracy
When will it end? I received three letters today, all containing copious amounts of near-unintelligible crap. After making my December hell by not giving me my payment until December 22 (because my birthday is late in the month — yes, that’s the official reason), they have now switched my payments to the third of every month. They provided no explanation, so it makes as little sense...

End of an Era
My annoying neighbor (yes, this one) has been evicted. Forcibly. I don’t know why. I never formally complained about her. Somehow I doubt that being an annoying neighbor is an evictable offense, so something must have gone wrong somewhere. That said, she crossed the line from “annoying neighbor” to “public nuisance,” and maybe that is evictable. Can you evict someone...

Georgia Homeless Shelter Refuses to Serve Gay... →
stfuconservatives: The House of Mercy homeless shelter in Columbus, Georgia, might want to go back and read their Bible. There’s a passage in Isaiah they should pay particular attention to: “Share your bread with the hungry, take the homeless into your homes, clothe the naked when you see him/her, do not turn away from people in need.” But instead of following that line, the House of Mercy...

I hate my body and the feeling is mutual
I have not been updating regularly because of a (not unfounded) fear of blogging from home. In order to use the wifi provided by my complex, I had to sign a paper saying that I would not look at anything “offensive” and that anything I write is essentially owned by them. I’m a bit worried about them finding my blog and getting pissy about it. I am possibly overcautious....
