some of my fave snaps from the full beauty project

http://fullbeautyproject.com/

That’s me in the upper right with the polka dots! :) A lot of people are saying that what I’ve done is wrong because by my appearance I’m glorifying poor health and other arbitrary attributes that are assigned to people like me. This is said under the assumption that by looking at me you can tell how I eat, how I live, the state of my physical and mental health and what my future will be. I could go into a stream of apologetics for myself but I feel it strays from the larger issue here:

  • Disablism - a set of assumptions (conscious or unconscious) and practices that promote the differential or unequal treatment of people because of actual or presumed disabilities.

I don’t think anyone’s health, be it physical or mental, should disqualify them from the right to exist, love, be loved and pursue happiness. I am 46 years old, healthy and well but even if I weren’t I refuse to wear a proverbial scarlet letter as if I owe it to society to simply disappear and live in perpetual shame. I would never expect that of anyone not because I’m blind to who they are but because it’s wrong

Keep on “Glorifying Obesity” by glorifying love for yourself and your parts. Health is not visible, nor is beauty at all times, but I see it in you and in all these women and it makes my heart happy.

Is there a Tumblr for racist, sexist, EVERYTHING-ist Twitter hashtags? Tonight there are some doozies. Last time I checked we had misogyny, racism, and fat-shaming! I just need to vent my rage.

Yoplait Eating Disorder Commercial Pulled

The most disturbing aspect of this for me is that if I had seen this commercial, I wouldn’t have thought much of it. This is how I think, day to day. Thanks for the complex, Dad.

“At some point in your adult life, you’ve probably walked into a party and felt a frisson of relief upon discovering at least one woman there who was fatter, uglier, and/or dressed more inappropriately than you. We sure have. But if you want to have any hope of making peace with your own body, you need to knock that shit off.

We’re not even telling you to stop just because it’s nasty, petty, and beneath you to judge other women so harshly; it is, but because you’re not a saint, and neither are we. We’re telling you to stop because it’s actually in your own self-interest to stop being such a bitch. ‘Cause you know what happens when you quit saying that crap about other women? You magically stop saying it about yourself so much, too.

Judging other women negatively creates a constant stream of nasty thoughts in your head. It is inevitable that you will end up applying those same standards to yourself. We think we’re building ourselves up when we do this but, really, we’re just tearing other people down to our level. And we hate to go all Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood on you, but tearing other people down isn’t really productive. It leaves you in the same place you started, which is full of loathing for your own body.”

Kate Harding and Marianne Kirby

If I was Oprah I would buy 10 billion copies of this book (Screw Inner Beauty/Lessons from the Fatosphere) and distribute them everywhere.

I think I’ve reblogged this before but need to again because it is so, so, so filled with ultimate truth.

stophatingyourbody:
This is my body.

I have stretch marks for days, my thighs touch & rub together like no other, and my armpits are dark for who knows what reason.. but this is MY body & I need to love it. So that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

BE BRAVE! JOIN THE REVOLUTION!

Dark armpits are a symptom of insulin resistance or other endocrine disorders. It’s known as acanthosis nigricans. This girl is lovely, but needs to get insulin and hormone levels checked!
I learned about it from Jenny Jones of all things. I had dark skin on the back of my neck, and I got tested. My fasting insulin levels were ten times higher than the high end of “normal.”

Tips for Fatties on bikes

Tips for Fatties on bikes

feministpizza:

fuckyeahfatpositive:

  • Always ride a bike that fits your height. The top tube (the bar that runs along the top of the bike) should never be touching your junk when you stand over it. It also shouldn’t be too short, if you can sit in the seat and your feet touch the ground you will not be fully extending your legs when you pedal and it can do damage to your knees over time.
  • Bike shorts or leggings are a god send for fatties on bikes. It might be hard to find actual bike shorts in larger sizes in a bike store, but the internet is wonderful :) Trust me, they will save your legs and beautiful thighs from too much chaffing.
  • Safety - Fat or not, always use lights when you ride at night! Flashing red in the rear. Normal light in front.
  • Look out for cars, pretend like they can’t see you (chances are, no matter how fat you are, they can’t see you because you are not another vehicle) and bike accordingly, BE CAUTIOUS.
  • If you ride in the road (be it in the bike lane or not), take the lane. Assert yourself in the road as much as possible.
  • Ride in groups whenever you can, not only is it more fun that way, you always got another biker to back you up.
  • Finally, don’t let people who drive past and yell at you get the better of you. I get yelled at every single time I ride my bike in the road. “hey fattie” or “get your fat ass off that bike and outta the road” don’t bother me anymore, because they will be shelling out tons of cash at the pump later! I usually respond with my middle finger and a yell of my own “FATTIE PRIDE”.

Good luck, and happy biking!!!!

:D !!

Good advice.

Huge

I am having a lazy day and watching Huge on Hulu. I hadn’t seen it before, but I like it quite a lot. It is both delightful and depressing. Every episode I’ve seen so far has made me relive some junior-high trauma, and isn’t that what great storytelling is all about? I am annoyed with the characters’ My So-Called Life-esque propensity to say “like” in a most unnatural fashion (I lived many formative years in SoCal in the ’80s — I know how to use “like” and this ain’t it), but other than that it’s one of the more thoughtful teen dramas I have seen. The first episode has some overacting, but that seems to go away. The Becca character is pretty much what I was like in high school — quiet, awkward, and geeky. I think I actually squealed when it was revealed that she was into LARPing. I wish the show had lasted longer.

Amusing side note: During the show, Hulu continually plays ads for Weight Watchers and all-you-can-eat IHOP pancakes. Thanks, Hulu.
