R.I.P. Poly Styrene (1957-2011)
D:
I am very, very sad about this. I just heard a review of her album on NPR a few days ago (Sunday, I think)…very sad.
This picture is what I think of when I think of the Spex.

Poly Styrene, Multiracial Feminist Punk Icon, Dead at 53
Here’s the thing about the 1970s British and American punk scenes: they were every bit as misogynistic and race-exclusive as the society they claimed to stand counter to. And Styrene didn’t look the part of a punk — at the time, she was a mixed-race not-skinny avowed-feminist teenager with braces and day-glo old lady clothes, who later struggled with mental health issues.
Short but sweet article about the great Poly Styrene.
Artist: X-Ray Spex
Song: I Am a Poseur
Album: Germfree Adolescents
Poly Styrene, lead singer of punk band X-Ray Spex, died yesterday

:-(
Oh no! So sad. I listened the X-Ray Spex album Germfree Adolescents a lot when I was in high school. It drove my parents crazy. I’ll listen to it now!
